Russia Tests Disconnecting from Global Internet Again

Russia Unplugs from the Global Internet… Again

The American think tank, Institute for the Study of War (ISW), reports that Russia has once again tested its homegrown "internet" by disconnecting from the global internet.

The Birth of Runet

In 2019, Russia started developing its own version of the internet, fondly referred to as Runet. The reason behind this move? Well, Russia was concerned that their internet would stop functioning if they were disconnected from the global internet.

During the recent test, which reportedly took place between July 4-5, Russian internet users were unable to access services such as Wikipedia and Google, says ISW. There were also issues reported by several Russian internet operators and some government agencies, including the Russian railway company.

Cyber Weapons and the Global Internet

In addition to protecting the country’s internet access, there is speculation that Russia could unleash various cyber weapons, such as viruses, onto the internet that would not affect Russia if they were disconnected from the global internet.

One example given is the NotPetya virus, which Russia originally released to damage Ukraine but eventually caused problems for Russia itself.

In conclusion, the internet in Russia is like a rebellious teenager – occasionally it just wants to be alone, and causes chaos when it doesn’t get its way.
